Kay Scroggins, RN

Kay Scroggins, RN, is resourceful, compassionate, relentless, inspirational and a brilliant visionary. She started her research site in 2001 with just one coordinator, a one-paragraph business plan and a vision to create the premier independent research site.

Today, she is President/CEO of one of the largest independent research sites in the U.S., with more than 60 employees, conducting more than 100 trials a year across 50 indications: Clinical Trials of Texas, Inc. (CTT).

Kay’s original business plan was a highly innovative model. She was a trailblazer in the industry by creating one of the first independent research sites which allowed physicians to conduct research while still focusing on their practice.

Innovation flows through every department in this highly efficient and adaptive company and Kay encourages and rewards team members who seek out more efficient workflows and creative problem solving to ensure enrollment success and high quality. As a result, the company is able to nimbly scale, such as it did last year when it enrolled almost 2,000 patients in a single trial in three months.

Before the industry began widespread implementation of adaptive technological advances such as eSource, eRegulatory and other telehealth technologies, Kay was already championing these vital mechanisms.

Quality is paramount in clinical trial data and Kay’s passion for quality is demonstrated in every department in the company. Her creation of dedicated Quality Control, Quality Assurance and Training departments ensure that the highest standards are consistent from Day One of joining the CTT team.

In addition to Kay’s mastery of conducting clinical trials, on the business side she builds teams that help make the business highly profitable, something that is challenging in this industry. The success is measured by year-over-year growth, profitability and continuous expansion in new therapeutic areas.

Kay is highly involved in the research site community and is a sought-after speaker. She is also an advocate for sites, working within the industry to maximize site support resulting in medications getting to patients more quickly.

She is seen as a leader, winning recognition both locally - as the recipient of the C Suite Award, Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame -- and as a founding partner of hyperCORE International, a network of super sites. She is the Committee Chair for Society of Clinical Research Sites Global Site Solutions Summit, and has been active in Eli Lilly's Site Advocacy Group and Clarity Child Guidance Center. Additionally, CTT has achieved prominence in the community and has been recognized as a Top Workplace for seven years

But maybe the most compelling thing about Kay is that she truly loves what she considers her company’s most important asset: people. During the uncertain times imposed on business by the COVID-19 virus, when other companies were cutting back hours and doing layoffs, Kay strategically planned to keep everyone employed, insured AND safe. This generosity isn’t just seen during difficult times, but on a constant basis since she believes that when she is financially rewarded, the entire staff should also be rewarded. That spirit of compassion is also evident in the way she encourages employees to put family first and balance work with home life.
